West Brabourne Extension 1
Green lane cottage oak frame extension ashford kent interior

West Brabourne

The original historic cottage suffered from an unsympathetic 1970s extension, and its principal elevation faced away from the street, into what had become the modern rear garden. The project involved the complete removal of the later additions and their replacement with a new wing, accommodating a sitting room and two bedrooms. The main entrance was relocated to the street-facing side to restore a more appropriate orientation for the house, and a new internal staircase was introduced to improve circulation.

The new elements were carefully designed to appear as an 18th-century addition in the Kent vernacular tradition. Constructed with oak framing, the extension featured Flemish bond brickwork with flint panels, traditional sliding sash windows, and detailing that reflects the craftsmanship and proportions of historic local architecture. The result was a seamless integration of new and old, restoring both coherence and character to the cottage.
