Elmstone Court, Preston⏐ Alteration & Extension ⏐ Grade II Listed Building ⏐ Conservation Area ⏐ Area of Outstanding Beauty
Our work at Elmstone Court involved the sensitive alteration and extension of a distinguished Grade II Listed country house located within a Conservation Area and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The project focused on creating a new single-storey rear extension and reconfiguring the kitchen and adjoining spaces to improve the flow and connection to the garden. Designed in a neo-Georgian style to complement the character of the main house, the extension replaced later additions of limited significance and restored a more coherent architectural form.
Internally, the ground floor was opened up to create an elegant and functional kitchen and dining area, while externally, new terracing and landscaping were introduced to establish a seamless relationship between the house, courtyard, and raised garden areas.
The design was informed by earlier pre-application advice confirming that the works would not harm the building’s historic fabric. The scheme retained key historic features, respected original layouts, and reinstated the sense of balance and proportion characteristic of the property’s Georgian origins.
All interventions were carefully developed to preserve the building’s special architectural and historic interest and to enhance its setting within the wider landscape, resulting in a timeless and sympathetic addition to this significant historic home.
