The Cabin, Throwley Forstal ⏐ Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ⏐ Alterations & Extensions ⏐ Custom Build
The Cabin project involved replacing a dilapidated 1920s–30s timber bungalow within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a new dwelling designed in the local vernacular. Inspired by traditional agricultural buildings, the main house takes the form of a three-bay threshing barn with a central midstrey, complemented by a stable wing and open-bay cart shed, while the detached garage echoes this style with an exposed green oak frame, weatherboarding, and clay-tiled roof. The exterior features untreated oak, brick plinths, timber casement and sash windows, alongside landscaping with gravel parking, stone paths, terraces, and indigenous hedging.
Internally, the home provides flexible, accessible living spaces, including an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, a ground-floor study/bedroom, and three first-floor bedrooms with en-suites. Sustainable measures such as rainwater recycling, enhanced insulation, a new septic system, and integrated bat and owl boxes reduce environmental impact. The scheme carefully responds to planning guidance, minimises visual intrusion, and reinforces local character, delivering a high-quality, contextually sensitive replacement dwelling.
