Martello Towers No’s. 6 & 7
The brief for this project is to restore and conserve two Martello Towers, which are scheduled ancient monuments, currently on Historic England’s ‘at risk’ register. In order to fund the restoration after decades of neglect, an enabling development of 5 new houses situated on the 229-acre site in Shorncfiffe, Sandgate, is proposed.

Both Martello Towers are proposed to be converted into residential use.
Tower No. 6 is proposed to be converted into a holiday let in order to fund their ongoing maintenance requirements. The Tower will house 2 bedrooms with en-suites, a family bathroom, a utility, open living, dining, kitchen, WC, and spacious living with a terrace on top with 360-degree viewing all around. Ancillary facilities like a garage and stores are to be housed in an underground structure adjacent to the main monument, accessible through a new link from its moat.
Martello Tower No. 7 is to be repurposed as a residential dwelling for market sale. Within it will be 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, a lounge, a living room, a kitchen, and a dining room. An ancillary underground water tank, which was intended for use under attack of the site, will be converted into three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a utility, kitchen, dining, a generous lobby, home office. The two units will be connected through a clear glass-covered staircase, a garden room, and a new link created through the moat wall. A timber bridge across the moat with a drawbridge will be provided to access the main tower.
The enabling development, which will fund the initial conservation and conversion works, is to consist of five new contemporary dwellings on the site. These will be for market sale.
