Horn Street
This project involved the design and construction of a two-storey rear extension to a Grade II-listed gatehouse to the old Seabrook Vale Estate, built in 1852. The original house was constructed in Kentish ragstone with a tiled roof and had not previously been extended.
The extension was commissioned to meet the client’s growing family, providing permanent ground floor accommodation for an elderly relative, additional living space, a guest bedroom, nursery/playroom, utility space, and improved access to the raised rear garden. A new internal staircase and level access from the yard enhanced accessibility, particularly for the elderly occupant.
Architecturally, the extension was designed to sit discreetly within the existing rear courtyard, surrounded on three sides by high retaining walls and the existing house. The form and scale were carefully considered to complement the original building without resorting to pastiche. A natural larch timber cladding and slate roof offered a visually subservient yet contextually appropriate contrast to the historic ragstone.
The project was delivered by a locally based team, with sensitivity to both the heritage character of the site and the practical needs of a multigenerational family.
