Dapple Grey

Designed and built for a private client on the outskirts of the idyllic Kent village of Elham, Dapple Grey is an architect-designed designed custom-built house in the Regency style.

The existing house was constructed in the mid-20th Century, and the style and layout of the house are typical of the period, with no reference to the local vernacular or surrounding context. The house is of solid construction, but with a very poor thermal performance, with low levels of insulation, large areas of single glazing, and an outdated heating system.

The applicants had recently purchased the property and wanted to replace the existing dwelling with a new house that would provide accommodation and a layout that is more suited to their lifestyle and that would make best use of the opportunities of the site. They also wanted to create a building that would fit into the surrounding context and respect the neighbours and wider area.
