Green Lane Cottage

Green Lane Cottage is a rural farmhouse near Ashford. We had submitted a planning application for the sensitive rebuilding of two existing outbuildings. This project formed the final stage in a phased renovation, following a previous extension completed in 2003.

The existing outbuildings, which were constructed from corrugated iron and breeze blocks, were in poor condition and visually detracted from the character of the main house. The proposal replaced them with a modest, traditionally styled structure that complemented the cottage and local Kentish vernacular. Materials included oak weatherboarding, handmade clay roof tiles, and cast iron rainwater goods.

The new building provides additional living space for the family’s children, including a loft area for occasional use. Thoughtfully designed to minimise its impact, the barn-style structure fits naturally within the existing cluster of rural buildings. Its layout and glazing offer a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the character of this peaceful countryside setting.

No trees were removed, and the secluded nature of the site ensured minimal visual impact from public viewpoints.
