South Lodge Barn, Stelling Minnis ⏐ Curtilage of a Grade II Listed Building ⏐ Conservation Area
This heritage-led self-build project involved the conversion of a Grade II Listed oak frame barn into residential accommodation within the curtilage of a Grade II listed farmhouse just outside Stelling Minnis, south of Canterbury. The barn was in very poor condition and the conversion to residential represented the best opportunity for the restoration and long term preservation of this historic building. The original building was a relatively small barn and the main barn was only suitable for conversion as a two bed property, so additional space was created to the side in a new build attached garage and link, with a view to allowing a future additional bedroom.
There was evidence that the barn was originally thatched and so it was agreed that the converted building should also have a thatched roof, with parts of the roof finished in a clay Kent peg tile. The external walls are clad with a dark stained softwood to match the style of similar buildings within the surrounding area. The linking structure is glazed.
The owners completed the conversion several years ago, and now want to create two additional bedrooms with en-suites in the attached garage and to rebuild the glazed link to create a new entrance.
