Green Lane Cottage

Project brief:

The brief for this project was a replacement for an ill-conceived 1970’s extension. The client wanted to enlarged kitchen to address the garden. Three good-sized reception rooms. Oak frame to master bedroom. Regency drawing room

Key issues:

Maximising the use of natural daylight within the building core. The building had a very high water table. The development size was restricted to 50% increase to the original building.

Solutions & successes:

The building does not look imposing from the road but becomes more impressive as it is approached. The floor area is maximized by very careful detailing enabling the wall thickness to be minimized. Well thought-out and generous spaces have been created whilst preserving the cottage character and scale. Excellent purpose-made joinery designed by Cyma. Very difficult structural problems involving high water table and no existing foundations overcome in an aesthetically pleasing manner and at very modest cost.
